Abstract:

The transition to a low-carbon economy is frequently challenged by predictions of insurmountable critical mineral shortages. This paper refutes these pessimistic projections most notably those popularized by Simon Michaux which rely on static extrapolations of regional energy lulls (such as the European Dunkelflaute) to a global scale. By critically analyzing the assumption that renewable grids require 28 to 84 days of battery buffer, this research demonstrates that such models ignore the economic and physical realities of grid interconnectivity and market adaptation.

Using an open-source "Minerals Optimizer" and a novel Copper Equivalent (CuEQ) metric to normalize data for ease of comparison, this study contrasts current decarbonization strategies with an optimized approach that prioritizes long-line transmission and progressive public policy. We find that leveraging "copper plate" transmission across larger geographical areas can reduce battery storage requirements to approximately four hours, drastically diminishing mineral demand. Crucially, the study posits that even if longer storage durations prove necessary, static models fail to account for market-driven innovation. Economic pressures will inevitably incentivize the adoption of alternative, earth-abundant chemistries, such as iron-air batteries, rather than the prohibitively expensive, mineral-intensive lithium-ion architectures assumed in shortage narratives.

Furthermore, the research highlights economic levers often overlooked in engineering estimates, such as Land Value Taxation (LVT) and zoning reform, which reduce the demand for personal vehicles and further alleviate mineral constraints. The findings provide a roadmap for a feasible green transition, proving that mineral constraints are not a geological inevitability, but a variable dependent on infrastructure choices, technological evolution, and policy frameworks.
