Abstract:

Over the last decade, significant work has taken place to improve the understanding of mining influence in Saskatchewan Potash mines. A foundation of knowledge based on measured data has been established on how mining influence varies with time and distance amongst other variables. Like mining influence, ground failure or behaviour driven by geological anomalies will result in increasing ground movement rates. If mining influence and how it varies can be well understood, there is potential to differentiate ground movement increases due to mining influence and those due to ground failure or anomalous behaviour. The information presented will outline the current understanding of mining influence and propose circumstances in which ground movement rates could reliably detect trends associated with ground failure or anomalous features. While this information could not predict when an event may take place, it could inform an operation of increased risk for an area to allow for proactive measures to be put in place.
