Biography

Andrew Holmes is a process engineer with Geosyntec Consultants who focuses his efforts on developing water treatment technologies through the design of novel materials and systems, including the development of treatment systems for the removal of metals and metalloids from mine impacted water. Andrew received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, with his thesis concerning the treatment of selenium impacted industrial waters. His expertise includes both active and passive approaches for chromium, selenium, and arsenic removal from mine-impacted water and brine as well as flue gas desulphurization wastewater and coal combustion residual landfill leachate. He has experience with the design, optimization, and operation of gravel bed reactors (GBRs), zero valent iron (ZVI) permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), biological Se treatment systems (both passive and active), high density sludge (HDS), lime precipitation, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), anaerobic digesters, facultative lagoons, nutrient recovery, and pH adjust systems.
