Studies indicate that up to 65% of emergency medical personnel experience SVP symptoms, with nearly half of healthcare workers affected at some point in their careers. The consequences are significant and include anxiety, guilt, burnout, reduced professional confidence, and, in some cases, post-traumatic stress symptoms. Beyond individual harm, SVP contributes to absenteeism, workforce instability, and decreased organisational performance, positioning it as both a patient safety issue and an economic concern.

A major shift in current research is the recognition of SVP as a system-level issue requiring structured organisational responses. Initiatives such as the European Researchers’ Network Working on Second Victims (ERNST) advocate for standardised peer support programs, training, and institutional frameworks to mitigate the impact of adverse events. While peer support interventions have demonstrated strong short-term benefits—significantly increasing perceived support and reducing emotional isolation—their long-term effectiveness on burnout and retention remains inconsistent.

Importantly, the concept of SVP extends beyond healthcare. Comparable psychological responses are observed in industries such as mining, where workers exposed to critical incidents (e.g., accidents or fatalities) experience similar distress, often compounded by cultures of stoicism and underreporting. Despite these parallels, structured support systems in mining remain less developed, relying primarily on reactive approaches rather than proactive, system-integrated strategies.

This presentation explores SVP as a cross-industry phenomenon, highlighting similarities between healthcare and mining and emphasising the need for organisational accountability. It will examine current evidence, policy developments, and intervention strategies, while identifying key gaps, including the lack of longitudinal data and standardised measurement tools.

Ultimately, addressing SVP requires a paradigm shift: from viewing psychological distress as an individual burden to recognising it as an inherent feature of high-risk systems. Building resilient organisations depends on embedding structured support mechanisms, fostering open cultures, and integrating psychological safety into operational frameworks.
