Abstract:

As social and legal expectations on Corporate Canada’s approach to Indigenous Relations work increase and change, it is important to foster an organizational culture that is respectful of Indigenous rights and prioritizes Reconciliation. Building a culture of Reconciliation within Teck is part of our strategic plan. To build trust-based relationships, we need to integrate relevant Indigenous knowledge and thinking across a broad spectrum of teams, which can positively shape and influence the way we work, our approach to inclusion, our project design and operations, and grievance resolution.

A culture of Reconciliation will support the mines of the future, which are safer, more efficient, and less carbon intensive, but that are also co-developed with rightsholders. The culture of Reconciliation concept is also reciprocal – it supports relationship-building with care, respect and understanding, and in return, these trust-based relationships inform and shape our internal culture.

At Teck, we have started building this culture by sharing resources and support for employees to deepen their understanding on the history, rights and culture of Indigenous People. We have invited employees on this learning journey and look to share various resources that support them in advancing across this journey from awareness to understanding, then to engagement and action.

We will focus on highlighting how Teck is building an ecosystem of internal and external focused Indigenous Relations activities that strengthen one another. Further, we will share practical initiatives that Teck has implemented to support with advancing this culture of Reconciliation and how this fuels our vision, and encourage participants to consider how different initiatives can be set up within their own organizations.
