Biography

Deepak Kirpalani is a senior research scientist at the National Research Council of Canada, Canada’s premier federal research institution, with an extensive career for over 25 years in researching and developing advanced multiphase processes and water treatment technologies. He is the lead principal investigator for the proposal and the proposed research centers on his developed cavitation technologies. He is responsible for the initiation of cavitation research at NRC in 2000 and has extended cavitation processing to a wide range of applications for water treatment for tailings management, bitumen heavy oil processing and waste water treatment. His research in chemical quantification of cavitation processes and low energy cavitation processes has led to 2 patent pending cavitation technologies that were applied during the project. Kirpalani’s multiphase and sprays research laboratories and are uniquely designed for bench-to-pilot operations for cavitation research and technology development and applied for industry partners and Canadian federal agencies. As a testament to his technology implementation, in 2000, he co-developed a bilateral feed conditioner mixing arrangement that was installed at Syncrude Canada and was applied for upgrading ~700,000 bbl/day of bitumen. The success of the technology led to licensing arrangement with Exxon Mobil Ltd. (Billings, Montana Refinery) and Imperial oil (Sarnia Refinery, ON).
