Abstract:

The presentation focuses on composting in the mines of Northern Canada and addresses several crucial aspects of waste management in remote areas. It begins with an analysis of current waste production and management practices, highlighting the challenges and innovations in this field.

On-site composting is presented as a viable solution for these regions. The benefits include waste valorization, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the usefulness of compost for site restoration after mine closure. However, challenges remain, such as fluctuating workforce numbers, the need to adapt purchasing policies to include compostable products, and environmental and human constraints.

Case studies illustrate the practical application of composting in various contexts, such as worker camps for hydropower dam construction and camps for gold, gemstone, iron mining, and uranium exploration. These examples show how composting can be effectively integrated into mining operations.

Current organic waste management practices in these regions include mixing organic waste with recyclables or non-recyclables, transporting waste off-site, trench burial, and incineration. Each of these methods presents challenges, including limited access to waste management services, frequent worker turnover in the camps, wildlife attraction at burial sites, and air pollution caused by incineration.

Waste management innovations focus on sustainable on-site treatment systems, such as composting, anaerobic digestion, and co-generation. These systems are favored by regulatory authorities and operators to minimize costs and environmental impact.

Economically, on-site composting can be more cost-effective than alternative treatments. It reduces transportation fees, royalties, and the maintenance and operation costs of incineration equipment. Furthermore, it extends the life of trench landfills by diverting organic waste from these sites. Savings can be further increased by using locally available carbon sources in the composting mix.

In conclusion, the presentation highlights the numerous advantages of on-site composting in remote areas while acknowledging the challenges to overcome for successful implementation.
