Mr. Mutahar Safdar
1 articleBiography
Mutahar Safdar is completing his PhD in the Additive Design and Manufacturing Laboratory (ADML) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, Canada. His doctoral research focuses on advancing artificial intelligence–driven monitoring and qualification of metal additive manufacturing processes, particularly directed energy deposition of nickel–tungsten carbide metal matrix composites. His work bridges machine learning, materials characterization, and industrial deployment to enhance process reliability and accelerate technology readiness. Before joining McGill, Mutahar earned a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where he was part of the Intelligent Computer-Aided Design (iCAD) Laboratory. His research there addressed interoperability and persistent identification challenges in computer-aided design (CAD) data exchange. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan. Mutahar’s research interests span AI-enabled manufacturing, engineering informatics, digital twins, and sustainable design. His overarching goal is to transform additive manufacturing into a reliable, high-volume, and intelligent production technology through human-AI collaboration and physics-informed learning frameworks.
