Abstract:

Shell’s target is to become a net-zero energy business by 2050. To achieve this goal, Shell believes that sustainable low carbon fuels are an essential lever. In particular, Renewable Diesel and Biodiesel can play a valuable role in reducing the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions from the mining sector in the decades to come. With diesel consumption from large mining vehicles accounting for up to 60% of a mine’s carbon footprint, there is urgency for miners to deploy alternatives. Because Renewable Diesel and Biodiesel can be blended with conventional oil-based diesel, and used in today’s vehicles and existing infrastructure, they offer practical and cost-efficient solutions for reducing emission from mining. They are particularly important where other solutions such as hydrogen and BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) are not available yet at scale.

First, this presentation will aim to review the differences between Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel to start with a shared understanding. Then we will look to address frequent questions related to the deployment of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel in mining operations including OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Warranty, suitability for colder climates, the robustness of the supply chain, and many more. Next, we will discuss in more detail the GHG (Greenhouse Gases) reduction potential expected from the use of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel. We will also discuss the biggest challenges for developing uptake of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel in mining: fuel cost, feedstock supply, feedstock sustainability and cost of investment. Then we will offer potential avenues for solutions. Finally, the audience will appreciate the sharing of some examples of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel trials or operational projects that mining companies can draw from prior to engaging in a Q&A session.
