Biography

Moe Momayez is Associate Professor in the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. He has a PhD degree in Rock Mechanics from McGill University, Canada. He has a longstanding interest in the development of new technologies that improve mine safety and productivity, geomaterials characterization, rock breakage, energy/process efficiency, and renewable energy. He is leading efforts to provide options for mitigating heat-related emergencies in hot underground mines through a combination of adaptive ventilation-on-demand, identifying factors specific to hot underground mines that contribute to heat strain risk, reducing the requirement for refrigeration in deep mines, contingency cooling, rapid evacuation protocols, and shelter-in-place. His current research also include low-temperature geothermal heat extraction from underground mines and transformation of reclaimed mining lands and tailing ponds into photovoltaic solar farms.
