Abstract:

Proposed Presenter(s):

Marlena Anderson, Leader, Social Responsibility, Teck Resources

Leslie Woolcott, Director, Inclusion & Career Development, Mining Industry Human Resources Council

Objectives:

To raise awareness of MiHR’s Indigenous Inclusion Training Standard
To share insights from users of the Standard.
To highlight some of the intercultural learning that occurred in the process of developing the Standard.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) published its final report detailing the experiences and impacts of the residential school system, creating a historical record of its legacy and consequences. One outcome of the report was a document detailing 94 calls to action across a wide range of areas including child welfare, education, health, justice, language and culture. In response to the TRC Calls to Action, MiHR collaborated with industry stakeholders to facilitate the development of an Indigenous Inclusion Training Standard for the sector. This involved developing a framework and set of tools that can be used by mining industry employers to specifically address the TRC’s Call to Action 92iii contained in the final report to the Government of Canada. Importantly, the Standard was developed by engaging Indigenous educators, trainers and equity practitioners both involved with and external to the mining sector.

The Standard identifies the learning outcomes and learning objectives along with performance indicators, that are used to guide the development of quality curriculum and training as well as to evaluate existing Indigenous awareness training/programs. Employers and Human Resources departments can use the Standard to determine training requirements while staff development professionals can use the Standard to design, develop, implement and evaluate curriculum and training programs.

This session will walk participants through the Standard and its application in terms of the Calls to Action. Participants will gain insights into the benefits of the Standard achieved through the validation phase of its development. Significantly, presenters will speak to their work together across cultures while developing the Standard. By exploring and unpacking their roles during the process, the speakers will model reflective practices, enabling participants to gain insights into intercultural collaboration and trust- and relationship-building through the project management cycle.
