Abstract:

The IAMGOLD’s Cote Gold Mine in Northern Ontario represents a pioneering step in the mining industry as the first greenfield mine in North America to implement Caterpillar’s autonomous haulage and Epiroc’s autonomous drilling technologies. This presentation explores the journey of integrating these advanced technologies and highlighting the challenges and successes encountered during implementation. Key topics include overcoming technical, operational, and human-factor challenges, as well as the significant positive impacts on health and safety (H&S) metrics and worker behavior.

By reducing human exposure to high-risk environments and enhancing operational efficiency, the deployment of autonomous mining systems will reduce incidents and ultimately injuries. The presentation will delve into the collaborative efforts required to align various stakeholders—technology providers, operators, and safety professionals — to ensure a smooth transition to autonomy while fostering a culture of safety and innovation. Additionally, we will examine how these changes have positively influenced worker behavior, promoting a mindset shift towards safety-first practices and continuous improvement.

The Cote Gold Mine's start up experience offers valuable lessons for the mining industry on integrating autonomy into operations, emphasizing the transformative potential of technology to create safer, more efficient, and sustainable mining practices.
