Abstract:

In this study, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of a transpiration cooling method using a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice structure, fabricated by additive manufacturing (AM), is experimentally investigated using binary pressure sensitive paint (PSP). Porous medium-based transpiration cooling is an advanced cooling method for protecting high temperature components of gas turbines and aero-engines from high heat loads. However, it is highly difficult to precisely control the characteristics of porous structures, such as porosity and pore size, in conventional manufacturing processes. As a result of recent advances in AM, it is now possible to produce complex porous media with engineered characteristics. Nature-inspired lattice structures based on TPMS are particularly attractive in the thermal management area due to their optimized internal flow structures and ability to be manufactured uniformly. Using a stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer, this study investigates the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of eight types of TPMS structures in a wide range of porosity values, including the gyroid, primitive, diamond, Koch, FRD, Neovius, IWP, and PMY lattices. At the same blowing ratio, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of the Koch-type structure is found to be the highest. In addition, increasing the porosity of the surface structure has shown a significant influence on the cooling effectiveness of structures.
