Mr. Matt Boulby
2 articlesBiography
Matt Boulby began his career working mainly on gold projects before shifting to nickel metallurgy when he joined The Metals Company (TMC) in 2020. The company is focused on commercialization of deep-sea polymetallic nodule deposits, located in international waters of the Pacific Ocean at depths exceeding 4,000m. Since joining TMC he has contributed to the development and testing of their near-zero solid waste combined pyro/hydro flowsheet, including managing bench scale testwork programs and supporting the execution of piloting and commercial scale demonstrations. He has enjoyed the challenge of designing and testing a customized metallurgical process designed to extract key critical minerals from the nodules while aiming to reduce the environmental and social impacts of doing so. In the past he has presented at MetSoc’s annual Conference of Metallurgists in both the pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy symposia, and in 2026 is presenting his paper on production of Manganese Sulfate from Polymetallic Nodules together with James McNeice of KPM. Matt graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University in 2019, is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and was named the MetSoc Emerging Professional in Pyrometallurgy in 2022. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Pyrometallurgy Section and as the MetSoc Secretary - a position on the Board of Directors.
