Empowering Responsible Mining Through EMDT's Digital Trust and Verification Tools

Abstract:

Globally, there is a rising demand for sustainably sourced critical raw materials in compliance with international sustainability regulations. Mining operators are facing increased pressure to demonstrate their commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, and to compete in markets that emphasize sustainable goods.

Moreover, mining operators share certifications and permits by email, exposing sensitive business data to risk. Interested parties cannot trust that data is authentic or unaltered, reducing the value in global supply chains.

Addressing these concerns, the Energy & Mines Digital Trust (EMDT) project – a collaboration between the Government of British Columbia, Government of B.C., mining operators, industry associations, performance certifiers, and digital technology providers - has identified digital credentials as a cutting-edge solution. Digital credentials allow data to be shared digitally with benefits such as increased accuracy, tamper-proof data sharing, and selective disclosure. The project is fostering a collaborative digital ecosystem that is improving trust, transparency, and efficiency in the mining sector using digital credentials.

When used at scale, digital credentials will allow companies to compete in a global market that prioritizes sustainability and safe data exchange. The adoption of EMDT's digital credentials strengthens its position as a global leader in digital trust and accelerates B.C.’s transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon, digital economy. Currently, EMDT has two digital credentials being exchanged for participating mines:

Mines Act Permit: Allows mining operators to quickly and easily prove permit status (currently available to major mine operators in B.C.).
Towards Sustainable Mining: Allows operators to submit TSM scores and share verified environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data securely.

This panel joins together Nancy Norris, Senior Director, ESG & Digital Trust, B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines & Low Carbon, Ben Chalmers, Senior Vice President of the Mining Association of Canada, and Megan Bonn, Director, Sustainable Development at Hudbay Minerals Inc. This team has worked to develop cutting-edge digital credentials that empower B.C. companies to securely share performance data.

This panel discussion will explore EMDT’s digital ecosystem, showcasing how B.C. companies can securely exchange performance data, fostering a more sustainable and responsible mining industry. Emphasizing the significance of ESG reporting, panelists will discuss its value for key stakeholders and partners within the global mining ecosystem.

B.C.’s 2023 Responsible Minerals and Metals Action Plan (CMMP) Advisory Committee has identified ESG data as the most valuable to supply chain actors. The committee's report recommended the development of verification tools to empower mining operators and companies to securely share performance data for improved accessibility.

Additionally, this panel will review EMDT's collaboration with the UN Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) on critical mineral supply chain tracing. They will discuss how EMDT’s application of digital trust technology is being championed by the United Nations to enhance trust in supply chain traceability.

This panel aims to inspire collaboration and innovation with the CIM attendees, emphasizing the critical role of technology in securing the future of Canada's minerals, metals, and energy landscape.
