Description:

Gas monitoring is a fundamental area of research aimed at improving safety, health, and operational efficiency in complex mining environments. Hazardous gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, etc are produced through the various geological processes, blasting, and the operation of diesel equipment, creating risks of explosion, toxicity, and oxygen displacement. Research has increasingly focused on advancing sensor technologies, including electrochemical, infrared, photoacoustic, and laser-based systems, to improve detection accuracy, sensitivity, and stability under challenging mine conditions.

Recent developments in wireless sensor networks, low-power communication protocols, and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms have enabled real-time data collection, transmission, and integration with automated mine control systems. Machine learning and data analytics are also being explored to model gas dispersion, predict hazardous accumulations, and support adaptive ventilation strategies leading to various levels of Ventilation on Demand (VoD). By ensuring safe gas concentrations and effective airflow management, VoD enhances worker safety and regulatory compliance. At the same time, optimized ventilation reduces the significant energy costs associated with running mine fans, which can account for 30–50% of a mine’s total power consumption. This evolving research field not only enhances mine worker safety but also contributes to more efficient energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by aligning ventilation with real-time gas monitoring data. Continued innovation in sensor design, calibration, and network resilience is essential for advancing the role of gas monitoring in creating safer and more sustainable mining operations.
