Biography

Dr. Monique Simair is a biogeochemist and two-time exited founder with nearly 20 years of experience in mine water management and treatment. She has taken treatment technologies from concept to deployment in complex mine environments and has direct experience navigating the constraints of developing, scaling, and commercializing new technologies in the mining sector. She brings a practical view on active and ‘passive’ treatment strategies. This includes where they succeed, where they fail, and how they are used together in practice. Her work connects these decisions directly to closure outcomes. As regulators push for the industry to move away from treatment in perpetuity, her perspective cuts through the idealism. She focuses on performance, risk, and the real constraints mines face when trying to transition to ‘passive’ or semi-passive systems. She now serves as the Director of the Slogotski Hunt Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of Saskatchewan.
