The mining industry operates under unique conditions that place significant strain on mental health—remote worksites, extended shifts, and high-risk environments create a perfect storm for stress, fatigue, and isolation. When these challenges go unaddressed, the consequences are far-reaching: impaired judgment, reduced focus, and increased safety incidents, all of which compromise an employee’s ability to remain fit for duty. Beyond individual well-being, untreated mental health issues ripple through operations, driving absenteeism, turnover, and eroding safety culture.

This 20-minute session will examine the critical link between mental health and fitness for duty in mining. We will identify the industry-specific stressors that contribute to declining mental health, explore the operational and human costs of neglecting these issues, and outline proactive strategies to mitigate this growing concern. Practical solutions—such as confidential, easily accessible, proactive individual and group mental health supports, and supervisor training—will be highlighted as actionable steps to build resilience and foster a mentally fit workforce.

By prioritizing mental health as a core component of safety and performance, mining organizations can protect their people and strengthen operational sustainability. Attendees will leave with insights and tools to champion proactive mental health support, ensuring their teams are prepared, supported, and truly fit for duty.
