Abstract:

As governments hear the 2030 clock ticking, regulation around ESG and sustainability disclosure is on the rise globally. Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, and California have all publishing regulations mandating disclosure of climate-related risks and their financial impacts. In response, critical sectors of the Canadian government have undertaken climate scenario analysis to identify and quantify physical and transition risk and to develop climate resilience and adaptation strategies.

Once faced with defining Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) for their companies, ESG leaders at mining companies are now faced with a different challenge: how to align current ESG programs with developing regulatory expectations, develop local critical mineral assets, respond to climate associated risks, implement risk mitigation measures, all while taking advantage of burgeoning financial incentives?

Alignment with Taskforce on Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) is no longer for advanced ESG programs and is now considered an essential starting point to meet the growing list of obligations. Contained within the TCFD is an essential element that is useful for critical mineral asset owners: development of a transition plan. However, developing a transition plan, quantifying financial risk, and developing risk mitigating targets is extremely nuanced.

With a focus on usable solutions, grounded in data, this presentation will bring insight into the value of transition plan development, regardless of the current program’s maturity. The presentation will offer a process for developing a credible and bankable transition plan and present data demonstrating the financial, compliance, and risk-mitigating value of a transition plan’s thoughtful development.
