Abstract:

Mining activities contribute significantly to the dispersion of airborne particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, posing potential threats to both the environment and human health. Monitoring and mapping these particulate matters are crucial for effective environmental management and the development of mitigation strategies. Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) technology has emerged as a powerful tool for mapping particulate matter in the air due to its high spatial resolution and ability to provide real-time data. This abstract explores the application of Lidar for mapping airborne particulate matter on mining sites.

This review consolidates recent studies and advancements in Lidar technology for the detection and mapping of particulate matter in mining environments. The methodology involves an extensive literature review, focusing on research articles, conference papers, and technical reports published over the past decade. The review also encompasses various Lidar systems, including ground-based, mobile, and airborne Lidar, highlighting their specific applications and advantages.

Lidar technology demonstrates exceptional capabilities in capturing high-resolution spatial and temporal data, offering a three-dimensional perspective on the distribution and concentration of airborne particulate matter in mining sites. Airborne Lidar, in particular, enables efficient coverage of large areas and facilitates the identification of particulate matter sources, pathways, and dispersion patterns. The integration of multi-wavelength Lidar systems enhances the discrimination of particulate matter types, allowing for a more accurate characterization of the aerosol composition.

The applications of Lidar in mining environments are diverse, ranging from routine air quality monitoring to emergency response planning. Real-time data acquisition and processing enable quick decision-making in case of elevated particulate matter levels, ensuring the safety of on-site personnel and nearby communities. Lidar's ability to penetrate challenging terrains, such as open-pit mines, further extends its utility in mapping particulate matter sources that may be difficult to access through conventional methods.

Despite the numerous advantages, challenges such as data interpretation, calibration, and standardization remain. Addressing these challenges requires interdisciplinary collaboration between environmental scientists, engineers, and mining professionals. Future research should focus on refining Lidar technology, developing standardized protocols for data interpretation, and exploring the potential of artificial intelligence in automating data analysis processes.

Lidar technology stands as a promising tool for mapping airborne particulate matter in mining environments, providing valuable insights for environmental management and regulatory compliance. The integration of Lidar into routine monitoring practices can contribute to the sustainable development of mining activities by minimizing their environmental impact and ensuring the well-being of surrounding communities. Continued research and technological advancements will further enhance Lidar's capabilities, making it an indispensable asset in the ongoing efforts to address the environmental challenges associated with mining operations.
