Abstract:

Controlling heat in deep underground mines remains a significant technical and economic consideration for ventilation engineers. Instead of viewing heat as issue underground, why can’t it be utilized to further increase profitability and lower environmental impact? Geothermal energy production could benefit mining as clean power would be readily accessible on site. Geothermal power plant installations could also last far past a mine’s life and rehabilitation stage, benefitting surrounding communities for years to come. Throughout this powerpoint different aspects of geothermal energy production will be analyzed in hopes to encourage more pilot projects. Important topics to be covered in the powerpoint include,

Different applications including,
- Climeon modules.
- Closed piping network systems.
- Oil and gas production possibilities – analyze current pilot projects in Northern Alberta.
- Geothermal heat production for surface infrastructure, during and after mine life.
Economics – Returns vs. Risk
Limitations
- Technical
- Geographical
What’s next…
- Pilot projects – possible locations that appear to be suitable for geothermal energy.

Biography of the presenter: Hello, My name is Shaye and I am currently in my third year of university at Queen’s, studying Mining Engineering. I chose mining as my discipline as I have always been passionate and intrigued by the industry growing up in Alberta. The mining industry has unlimited potential and with current trends towards decreasing environmental impact, I believe the demand for mining for mining will take off in my career. Throughout my career in mining I would like to have a positive impact on the sustainability of mining. Outside of mining, I like to be involved with my community through a variety of different extracurriculars including, Varsity Rowing, Queen's Global Energy Conference, and the Engineering & Mining Societies student bodies!
