Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic created novel challenges in the mining industry, which has created the opportunity for collaboration in problem-solving. With the combined efforts of the Ontario Mining Association, Laurentian University’s Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health, and MIRARCO Mining Innovation, the COVID-19 Modified Bow-tie Project was undertaken to compare the approaches developed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect workers’ health and safety in an unprecedented, rapidly evolving situation. The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate how the submissions of individual companies regarding their prevention and mitigation controls for COVID-19, were used to discover gaps in the information, analyze verification of controls, and ultimately develop operational standards and lessons learned to share with all. The information that has resulted from this project will assist in maintaining a safe workplace and share best-practice amongst all workplaces, including the preparation for the next challenge in the future.
