Biography

Mr. Jian Zhao is a Ph. D. candidate in Mining engineering at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on developing and characterizing eco-friendly and low carbon footprint cement-based materials, including thermal insulation materials and grouting materials, for mining and geothermal applications. His ongoing dissertation project articulates the development and application of novel environment-friendly grouts used for borehole heat exchangers (BHEs). This research addresses the main problems that exist in current grouts, including high shrinkage, low thermal conductivity, and high carbon emissions, which significantly affect the performance of BHEs. The novel grouts developed in this research have excellent volumetric stability and thermal conductivity by reducing up to 50% carbon emissions compared with conventional grouts. In addition, he is interested in implementing machine learning techniques to cement-based mixtures to aid in mixture design.
