Abstract:

The cement industry has historically been associated with significant environmental challenges; there has however been a paradigm shift as the industry has embraced sustainability as a guiding principle. This presentation will outline the current and future progress made in enhancing the sustainability of the cement and cementitious materials sector in Canada, examining key initiatives, technological innovations, and evolving practices.

Sustainability in the cement industry is a multifaceted concept encompassing environmental stewardship, economic viability, and social responsibility. One of the pivotal areas of advancement is the reduction of carbon emissions, a major contributor to climate change. Cement production is inherently carbon-intensive due to the chemical process of clinker formation. Yet, the industry has made significant strides in adopting alternative fuels, alternative raw materials, as well as enhancing energy efficiency throughout the supply chain to minimize its carbon footprint. The deployment of state-of-the-art technologies like carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) has further demonstrated the industry's commitment to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Circular economy principles have gained prominence in the cement sector, with an increasing focus on resource efficiency and waste utilization. The integration of alternative raw materials, such as industrial by-products and recycled materials, not only reduces the reliance on traditional resources but also minimizes waste generation. This shift towards a circular economy model not only addresses environmental concerns but also enhances the industry's resilience in the face of resource scarcity.

Furthermore, sustainable practices are extending beyond production processes to include the entire lifecycle of cement products. Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies are being employed to quantify the environmental impact of cement from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. This holistic approach enables the identification of opportunities for improvement at every stage, fostering a more sustainable and transparent industry. The cement and concrete industry in North America are at the forefront of transparency when it comes to environmental product declaration (EPDs), having participated in industry average EPDs since 2015, and have already demonstrated significant reductions in embodied carbon throughout.

Social responsibility is another integral component of the cement industry's sustainability journey. Stakeholder engagement, community involvement, and responsible sourcing of raw materials are becoming standard practices. The industry is increasingly recognizing the importance of local community partnerships, addressing concerns related to air and water quality, and promoting inclusive development in areas where cement plants operate.

The cement industry has made significant strides in enhancing its sustainability profile, transforming challenges into opportunities for positive change. The adoption of alternative fuels, advancements in energy efficiency, circular economy practices, and a growing emphasis on social responsibility collectively underscore the industry's commitment to a more sustainable future. As the cement sector continues on this trajectory, increased collaboration with the mining sector will be crucial to accelerate and amplify sustainability gains in mine backfill, tailings stabilization and mine construction. This presentation will serve as a snapshot of the ongoing progress as well as further exploration on the evolving landscape of sustainability within the cement industry and how it ties into reduced embodied carbon for the mining industry.
