Abstract:

Wastewater streams must be closely monitored, enabling an immediate reaction to any change, in this way avoiding environmental damage and unnecessary expenses. A task that became increasingly important with the obligation to comply with stringent environmental regulations.

On-line energy dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technology, which is robust and non-destructive with low detection limits and highly accurate and reproducible analysis results offers the possibility to monitor elements from sodium up to americium at concentrations from a few ppm to 100%. On-line EDXRF technology can be tailored to industrial needs with optional sample conditioning and can be incorporated in many different process streams in a wide range of industries, including mining and metals independent of the location within the process flow of wastewater or upstream processing.

The practical use of EDXRF on-line elemental analysis for the direct monitoring of wastewater and process streams in the mining and minerals industry will be illustrated.

Biography of the presenter: Chemist by training Marie-Eve Provencher worked for 5 years during her studies for Alcoa where she was initiated to the techniques of elemental analysis (XRF) and mineralogical analysis (XRD) in the industry. Marie-Eve is working for Malvern Panalytical since 10 years and during this time has contributed to helping companies and organizations in the mining sector to make their production process more profitable, increase the quality of the finished product and reduce waste. Her specialty is the application of new analytical solutions for the exploration, monitoring and optimization of processes in the mining and metallurgical industries such as sample preparation by fusion (Claisse), XRF, XRD, particle size at-line and on-line as well as automation.
