Abstract:

The structural integrity of the secondary side in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) is frequently compromised by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) and the subsequent transport of corrosion products to steam generators. While conventional volatile alkalizing agents manage bulk water pH, they do not provide a stable film under high flow conditions. This review evaluates the effectiveness of Film-Forming Amines (FFAs), such as octadecylamine (ODA) and N-oleyl-1,3-propanediamine (OLDA), as a supplementary corrosion mitigation strategy. These amphiphilic structures adsorb onto metal/metal oxide surfaces via electrostatic and coordination bonding, forming hydrophobic, nanoscale protective films. Literature data indicates that FFAs can significantly reduce corrosion rates—with some studies reporting inhibition efficiencies exceeding 80%—by increasing charge transfer resistance and surface hydrophobicity. However, the characterization of these films varies significantly across literature, ranging from thin organic layers of 2–16 nm to thicker multilayered structures reaching 95 nm. Furthermore, challenges regarding thermal stability above 220°C, and the operational risks of improper dosing persist. The review concludes by identifying significant knowledge gaps that must be addressed to ensure the reliable application of FFAs in PWR secondary side.
