Abstract:

Operating a mine that has been active since 1974 presents unique challenges, particularly due to complex hydrogeology and diverse geological units. Dewatering methods must be specifically tailored to the iron mine's characteristics to ensure safe and efficient operations. This presentation will share lessons learned and mitigation measures implemented throughout the project. Groundwater dewatering is essential for maintaining operational safety and optimizing productivity in open-pit mines. We will discuss the five-year groundwater dewatering program at the Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines, which are owned and operated by ArcelorMittal Mines Canada. The program aims to minimize groundwater impact on slope stability and daily production while optimizing operational costs.

Benefits of the Dewatering Program

The dewatering program targets several key objectives:

1. Slope Stability: Reducing groundwater pressure minimizes the risk of accidents and landslides, ensuring a safer work environment.

2. Production Optimization: Lower water accumulation interruptions increase mining operational efficiency.

3. Cost Reduction: By minimizing re-drilling and re-blasting needs, we contribute to a more cost-effective resource management approach.

4. Environmental Impact Improvement: The program reduces the volume of water discharged into the environment, ensuring compliance with provincial regulations.

Presentation of Phase 1 and Phase 2 Results & technical aspect of the program

This presentation will highlight the results achieved during Phases 1 and 2, including lessons learned and the current project status, while outlining the next steps to ensure the ongoing success of the program.

We will also discuss the technical aspects of the program, including drilling techniques, pumping infrastructure, discharge solutions, and risk management strategies. These components are essential for optimizing operations and minimizing potential challenges as we move forward.
