Biography

Arik is a second year MASc student, who graduated with a BASc in Mining Engineering from Queen’s University in 2021. Before beginning his MASc, he spent the summer working under Dr. Charlotte Gibson and Dr. Anne Johnson assisting with the creation of a Women in Mining survey to determine how gender plays a role in the professional development of Queen’s mining graduates, as well as developing and recording lecture material for a course on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting. His current research is focused on the remediation of the defunct Cantung mine in Northwest Territories from a technical and social perspective. Using flotation to reprocess the tailings, he plans to remove sulphides present in the tailings to prevent the production of acid rock drainage. Arik is also looking into how the failures of Cantung’s past owners have affected the local communities and how policies can be changed to provide Indigenous communities with autonomy into how resources on their traditional territories are extracted. Part of Arik’s master’s research was conducted with CanmetMINING, a division of Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa, Ontario.
