Abstract:

The behavior of pollutants in the opening of a long-distance decline depends on auxiliary ventilation conditions. It is thus important to understand the behavior of pollutants when exposed to these conditions to design effective auxiliary ventilation schemes. Auxiliary ventilation conditions should be selected appropriately, especially if the mine is poorly ventilated, as pollutants can affect other workplaces. In this study, auxiliary ventilation conditions were set during the opening of a single decline in a mine with poor ventilation conditions according to the location of the fan, duct arrangements, and ventilation systems. Correspondingly, the behavioral characteristics of pollutants and the time needed to reach the allowable concentration of pollutants for each condition were evaluated. The results of the study demonstrated that the most favorable ventilation conditions were achieved when a) the fan was installed at the end of the duct and not at the workplace, b) the end of the duct was placed at a position to achieve a large exhaust air volume in the mine ventilation network, and c) the forcing auxiliary ventilation method was used.
