Abstract:

The CIM Health and Safety Society (HSS) has undertaken a groundbreaking initiative to create a centralized database to prevent serious injuries and fatalities (SIF) across Canadian industries, including mining, construction, and energy. This initiative addresses the critical need for standardized data collection, actionable insights, and knowledge-sharing to improve health and safety performance.

The SIF Prevention Database will track fatalities, serious injuries, and high-potential near-miss incidents, transforming this data into best practices and guidance for operational leaders and health and safety practitioners. By leveraging leading and lagging safety metrics, the database aims to foster a culture of continuous improvement and drive the industry closer to achieving the vision of Zero Harm.

Key deliverables include:

A "living" SIF Risk Standard to identify and verify critical controls for incident prevention.
An implementation guide for integrating Critical Control Management (CCM) into safety systems at corporate and site levels.
A centralized database providing real-time, standardized safety statistics and trend analysis.
Accessible resources and lessons learned to enable rapid application across organizations.

This session will showcase the project's purpose, scope, and progress, highlighting the collaborative efforts of CIM members, industry volunteers, and regulatory partners. Attendees will gain insights into how the initiative advances safety excellence, the challenges of standardizing data across provinces and territories, and the future roadmap for expanding the database to other industries.

Join us to explore how this initiative reshapes safety practices in Canadian industries and fosters a culture where no lives are lost or maimed.
