Description
Over the past decade, members of the Saskatchewan Mining Association (SMA) have demonstrated unwavering commitment to reducing serious accidents and fatalities while improving safety outcomes across the province’s mining sector through two first of a kind initiatives.
Central to this commitment has been the consistent sharing of Dangerous Occurrence Reports among SMA member companies. Sharing these reports has fostered a culture of transparency and continuous learning, enabling the industry to recognize common threats, address root causes, and implement proactive safety measures. The open exchange of incident information has not only strengthened individual site practices but has also elevated safety standards across the entire sector.
Complementing this initiative is the development and execution of the SMA’s annual Mine Safety Summit, a cornerstone event that has grown in scope and impact since its inception. The Summit brings together safety professionals, operations and maintenance personnel, industry leaders, as well as regulators, to share incident details, innovations, and align on best practices. Over the years, it has evolved into a dynamic platform for sharing case studies, safety innovations, and reinforcing the industry's shared commitment to zero harm.
This presentation will reflect on the development of these initiatives, lessons learned, the challenges overcome, and the progress made. It will also explore the future of safety in Saskatchewan mining—how collaboration and innovation will continue to shape a safer, more resilient industry. Attendees will gain insights into the strategies that have driven success and leave with actionable ideas to further enhance safety performance in their own organizations.
This presentation marks a significant milestone in that journey—celebrating more than ten years of collaborative effort to prevent serious accidents and fatalities in mining operations.
