Theme: Innovation – Digital Transformation
Digital Transformation is being embraced by mining companies and hybrid Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G, BLE and LoRaWAN communication networks are becoming mainstream on surface, in mills and underground.
Traditional tracking technologies like RFID Wi-Fi tracking are being complemented with BLE Beacons to track tools, assets in areas that do not have network coverage, and automate trip cycle data collection for Short Interval Control. Ultra-Wide Band is enabling 20 - 30 cm, high-precision tracking and even being integrated with vehicle braking systems as part of Proximity Detection Systems. BLE and LoRaWAN technologies are allowing mines to collect Industrial Internet of Things data from wearables on people and sensors installed across the mining operation. While data collection is important, a holistic approach to how this data can be used to make and mine safer, and its operation more cost effective, is necessary.
A critical evaluation of what can and should be done with all this data is especially important as labour shortages, supply chain problems, new safety protocols, and cyber security considerations are significantly impacting how an operation is run.
Many mining companies are increasing the use of Digital Twin models to improve operational safety and efficiency. This paper will illustrate how mines can better utilize their data in conjunction with geospatial positioning information to create real-time, geospatial digital twins of their operations to increase situational awareness, make informed decisions on how to react to problems that arise during each shift, and improve overall safety. It will also discuss how mines can become more operationally intelligent by using this data to automate and control processes throughout the operation.
