Abstract
The Alberta Mine Safety Association (AMSA) joins with its member organizations, in collaboration with other major industry sectors, to tackle prevention of persisting serious injury and fatality (SIF) incidents.
SIF prevention is an AMSA imperative. The AMSA resolve to effectively address SIF prevention leveraged reported industry practice, experience and research to carry out workshops that identified the latent causes for this class of incidents. Based on these industry informed learnings, AMSA has developed an approach for SIF prevention that in turn is continually updated and improved with every site visit and the parallel integration of emerging leading practices.
Today’s presentation outlines and exemplifies how SIF prevention, both previous and current, is being implemented in complex operating environments with good results and room to improve. Fundamental to this approach is the span of application and the targeted nature for controls identified as critical to proactively prevent incidents. Very importantly, we see positive progress with an effective infield response to these so-called critical control variances, in conjunction with control gap reporting, trending and solution oriented actions supported by every level in the organization.
