Abstract
The Kassandra mines located in NE Chalkidhiki, Greece, include the Olympias, Mavres Petres – Madem Lakkos and Skouries mining facilities, are owned and operated by Hellas Gold S.A., subsidiary of Eldorado Gold Corporation. In the context of its mining, maintenance and development operations and in accordance with the applicable legislative framework, Hellas Gold has been continuously monitoring for over a decade several environmental parameters, not only within the boundaries its mining facilities, but also in the wider NE Chalkidiki area, with over 500 monitoring points across the region. These parameters include, among others, water and soil quality, dust and pollutant emissions, the geotechnical and chemical monitoring of the Kokkinolakkas EWMF, as well as energy consumption. In an effort to increase transparency and public awareness and in order to solidify the company’s SLO with its stakeholders, Hellas Gold has made freely available the results of its Environmental Monitoring Program, to the public. The GIS platform utilized as a communication medium, and which is hosted within the company’s website, presents the information in a user-friendly manner, and is continuously updated with the latest data. Additionally, all environmental reports submitted to the relevant authorities, with the statistical interpretation of the monitoring results, are also made available to the user through this platform. The current approach consists of an innovative framework to communicate environmental data to the public in the context of transparency and legislative compliance, as well as a useful tool in stakeholder management.
