Abstract
Over the last decade Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium (RTIT) has generated significant additional value from it’s waste dumps and waste streams. At Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa, re-treating of the Mineral Separation Plant tails has re-invigorated a site with declining grades, at QMM in Madagascar a new marketable product was generated from a waste stream and at Havre Saint Pierre in Quebec, value is created from the remining of waste dump, which was first deposited in the 1960’s. The presentation elaborates on these case studies and outlines some of the unique public reporting challenges that come from the use of these non-conventional material sources.
The presentation also looks to the future, at the next potential targets and how these continue to pose a challenge to the conventional reporting cycle.
