Abstract
Almost all mine owners, no matter how big or small, need to enlist the assistance of many consultants, vendors, and contractors to complete the work to build a mine and get it to the point of meeting target production. Successful projects are able to assemble this broader team and effectively motivate them to achieve whatever targets are applicable to the specific project. However, there is a growing trend of dysfunctional contracting relationships which is adding to the list of reasons major capital projects are failing at an alarming rate. The causes are a combination of project structures, behaviors on both sides of the contractual relationship, and systemic constraints. This presentation provides some insights into this trend and presents a few strategies for solving some of the challenges.
