Abstract

For Anglo American’s Los Bronces SAG Mill, isolation of energy is a critical control and a requirement each time a person completes equipment maintenance. It is one of the most critical controls to ensure worker safety. And, with SAG mill isolations requiring licensed electricians, multiple tasks were requiring electrician attention simultaneously, leading to delays, high costs, and exposed risks. This led to the question of how the process of lockout/tagout could be optimized using Remote Isolation Systems (RIS). So, Anglo American’s innovation group developed a specification for an ideal RIS system. The resulting requirements were for anyone to be able to use the system (not only electricians), with safe and trusted design, tamper proof, and integration with other plant systems. A pilot project is now in process with implementation in early 2022 to validate the concept of safety, reduced costs, and enhanced uptime for an enhanced RIS system in mineral processing, and this presentation will showcase the case study.
