Abstract
It has been proposed by many organizations that digitalization and automation have the potential to disrupt the mining industry in the next decade in terms of improving productivity, safety, and environmental footprint. While implementation of autonomous haulage system is expanding across the industry, shovel performance and operations are becoming a bottleneck in haulage systems. This paper proposes a path to autonomous shovels to address some of existing challenging within autonomous systems, and provides a deep dive on one such step towards autonomous shovels. One of current challenges in many operations is how to collect data from shovels in an interoperable, scalable and agile fashion to enable real-time optimization of shovel operations. This paper summarizes a case study of implementing a pit to cloud scalable enterprise solution on shovels as a path towards autonomous shovels in open pit operations.
