Abstract
During a 2-year period in 2018-2019, the Matagami mine operations sent an unacceptable number of injured workers to the hospital requiring medical treatment. On August 1st, 2019, after recording four reportable injuries during a 30-day period, the decision was made to stop the operations for 7 days in order to regain control of health and safety performance.
This presentation outlines the various interventions and steps taken that allowed the mine to achieve zero reportable workplace injuries (zero-harm and a recordable injury frequency of 0.0) over the course of the 14+ months that followed. In 2021, the Matagami operations was recognized by the CIM as the co-winner of the national John T. Ryan award for lowest reportable accident frequency among base metal mines in Canada. The presentation will also demonstrate how building a fully integrated health and safety culture allowed the operation to meet and exceed production objectives.
