Abstract
In 2014 Cementation was awarded a design-build contract by Compass Minerals for their Goderich Shafts Relining Project. Engineering began in August 2014. Site work began in March 2015 and concluded by the summer of 2019. The work included the removal of two existing headframes and the design, supply and erection of two new headframes, as well as the rehabilitation and relining of two mine shafts. Scope also included numerous underground construction projects, including, significant mine ventilation upgrades and ore handling installations. There were 543,474 site work hours on the project and no lost time injuries. At the CIM Conference in May 2021 the project was awarded the Hatch–CIM Mining and Minerals Project Development Safety Award.
The presenter will give an overview of the project and the safe work systems and practices employed. The presentation will focus on how the project team developed a supportive culture which led to a culture of committment to safety which went much further than a culture of compliance.
