Abstract
Considerable advances in implementation of sensor-based sorting (SBS) technologies have been made over the last decade. Despite recent progress, a number of methodological challenges developing robust test protocols as well as devising procedures for validation and optimization of sorters performance still remain. In this paper, we present results of several case studies that focused on the application of dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) for particle sorting of nickel and titanium ores. The paper briefly describes DE-XRT principle of detection, discusses calibration procedures used and compares the results of small-scale amenability testing with pilot scale production tests carried out using COMEX® OCXR-1000 integrated X-ray transmission and optical ore sorting system. Special emphasis is placed on discussing methodologies used for interpretation and validation of particle sorting tests.
