Abstract
As mines increase production rates and reach higher depths, the higher stress condition and elevated seismic activity lead to increased instability risk and challenges production planning.
Distributed Fiber Optics Sensing (DFOS) is an emerging technology enabling both active and passive seismic applications using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and deployment of fiber optics cable.
This paper provides an overview of DAS technology in applications such as block caving, pre-conditioning and VSP seismic surveys. It reviews system layout, data analysis, and the output, demonstrating the technology’s capabilities and limitations in detecting and processing seismic signals and stain data.
It also expands on how the seismic and strain data can be integrated to map the status of the rockmass on a continuous or on-demand basis.
