Abstract
Mining companies are setting net-zero carbon targets and developing strategies to address the largest emission sources, typically in mining activities and power generation. In mining activities, there is consensus that energy reduction, electrification, and automation of material movement is key and miners are demanding rapid commercialization and adoption of battery, fuel cell, and other electricity powered equipment as well as emerging high-grading techniques such as ore-sorting. However, changing the way companies mine and move material matters to the processing plant and waste management, and the system's impact must be considered. This presentation demonstrates the connection between mining and mineral processing in decarbonizing the sector and identifies unintended consequences through examples such as ore sorting, selective mining, in-situ processing, and fragmentation for carbon sequestration.
