Abstract
As the world strives to reach net-zero emissions or carbon neutrality by 2050, Sacré-Davey has seen a marked increase in national, provincial, and municipal governments announcing hydrogen strategies to help meet their targets. Hydrogen technologies are playing an important role in the transition to net-zero GHG emissions and meeting ESG goals across many industries, including mining and minerals.
Sacré-Davey has been involved in the hydrogen industry for more than 20 years and was the developer and lead partner in BC’s Hydrogen Highway - Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project (IWHUP). This was a multi-faceted, multi-partner collaboration that captured processed waste hydrogen from a vented stream and developed the infrastructure to purify, store, transport, and fuel hydrogen powered vehicles in British Columbia.
Given the lack of applicable codes and standards for this broad development, Sacré-Davey took the lead in bringing together various stakeholders to set the design standards for the work. Eventually these learnings became incorporated into what is now known as the Canadian Hydrogen Installation Code.
Today, our company is actively working on many large hydrogen projects across North America, including a 20-MW green hydrogen production facility, an 88-MW green hydrogen production plant for biofuels, hydrogen refueling stations, hydrogen chemical conversion, and hydrogen blending into natural gas infrastructure.
Our expertise runs from policy through production and end use, and covers hydrogen extraction, production, purification, compression, storage, liquefaction, transportation, transmission, distribution, blending, fueling stations, fuel cells, other end-use applications, and applicable codes and standards.
As these technologies evolve and become more commonplace in industrial applications, the need for up-to-date policies has become more pressing. Sacré-Davey’s hydrogen knowledge and experience has positioned us, along with our strategic partners, as leaders in Canadian policy development. We are actively engaged on various policy/regulatory, technical, and economic assessments related to hydrogen with the Province of Nova Scotia, the Province of New Brunswick, and Natural Resources Canada.
When it comes to the mining industry, Sacré-Davey is well-positioned to provide insights into hydrogen opportunities that will support Canadian mining operations in reducing their carbon footprint.
