Abstract
The technology envisioned is now here but fully automated sites cannot achieve their full potential if a reliability culture and its practices are not set in place in a timely fashion. When a site upgrades to high tech operations but does not rethink its approach to maintenance, its practices and mindset do not change automatically following in line with the latest technology. Those who were deemed good operators and maintainers are not naturally catching up with technology. Even on new sites, if we transfer crews from an old facility, knowledge and skills must be upgraded and training becomes necessary otherwise people continue to use their old practices and the new technology’s full potential cannot be reached.
This issue is exacerbated by the increased importance of asset management compared to operational workforce. With the increase in operations automation that has occurred over the years, there are less operators, but a greater number of complex equipment that require more specialised maintenance and technical knowhow.
Learn how a step-by-step approach to attaining a reliability culture and adapted practices can be used to evolve from firefighter culture to Reliability 4.0.
Culture does not change instantly by waving a magic wand. It takes time and does not necessarily occur progressively as we would like it. It happens in steps and comes from a deep understanding of the next level’s fundamental mindset. The best way is to ensure that a maintenance organisation is mobilised for reliability culture BEFORE a process change is set to take place; making sure to follow the step-by-step approach.
Learn how upgrading to Best Practices must be combined with an increased mobilisation for a reliability culture to support new high-tech operations and reliability technical capabilities and how to influence and lead the relevant change. This applies not only to upgrading to a superior technological process but also to changing a culture to ensure that practices are improved making any facility more reliable. This approach works for old facilities as much as newly built ones. The key is to changing the culture throughout the organisation.
