Abstract
Increasing gender diversity in male-dominated industries has become an increasingly important for many reasons. Although efforts have been made to increase the representation of women in these fields, many challenges and risks remain. One of the most significant challenges is the lack of female role models and mentors, which can make it difficult for women to envision a successful career path in these industries. Additionally, there may be unconscious biases and stereotypes that prevent women from being hired or promoted, which can further limit their opportunities.
Despite these challenges, increasing gender diversity in male-dominated industries can bring many benefits not only for women but the workforce as a whole. Benefits include increased innovation, better decision-making, and a more positive work culture. However, it requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders to overcome the challenges and mitigate the risks associated with such a shift.
Copper Cliff Mine through the completion of the Phase 1 Capital Expansion has increased from 376 employees with less than 5% women in the workplace in 2020 to 700 employees with 15% women in the workplace by mid-2022. The change to the workforce demographics represents a large shift from the historical make-up of the mine and despite thorough planning and preparation it was not done without difficulty. Despite the challenges the change to the mine has been positive and not only has the total number of women in the workforce increased but representation in management is also increasing.
