Abstract
In recent years, the world has rallied around the urgency to decarbonize and shift towards more sustainable practices for the betterment of future generations. Overall, this shift has triggered a collective divestment from fossil fuels and has had a profound impact in the way we use, generate, and transport energy. New technologies are being introduced in all contexts to facilitate this transition; this extends to mining companies and their underground operations. The emergence of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) for mining purposes has piqued interest within the industry due to features such as reduced vehicular emissions, economic opportunities, and divestment from fossil fuel; however, the introduction of BEVs has led to concerns surrounding battery safety and other risks associated with the implementation of new technology.
This presentation provides an overview of battery safety (LFP chemistry); associated hazards, causes, and mitigation methods; and engineered safety features & controls as it pertains to Sandvik Load & Haul BEVs.
