Abstract
Women in Mining and Women in Nuclear Saskatchewan Inc. (WIM/WiN-SK) is a not-for-profit organization that operates a joint chapter in Saskatchewan, Canada. The joint chapter was formed in 2012 as a result of the active uranium and potash industries in the province. WIM/WiN-SK’s vision is driving growth through parity. The organization works to inspire, connect, and support a diverse and inclusive workforce in the Saskatchewan mining and nuclear industries. The organization is largely run by over 40 volunteers, many of whom also work in, or support, the mining and nuclear industries. In 2017 WIM/WiN-SK launched a mentorship program that pairs women mentees with mentors of any gender. The WIM/WiN-SK mentorship program supports mentees and mentors through a 6-month partnership. Mentees joined the program to develop and practise interpersonal and interview skills and to gain support with career transitions. Mentors joined the program to give back and help others, improve their own leadership skills, and network. While a key driver for the WIM/WiN-SK mentorship program is to support women in their careers, an outcome of the program is also supporting mentors to become allies and champions for women in the workplace. This presentation includes an overview of the mentorship program, discusses the critical step of matching mentees with mentors, and shares feedback and insights from past participants.
