Abstract
It is recognized that metals will play a huge role in supplying needed critical minerals and metals to attain global decarbonization. An expert panel seeks to discuss the relative importance of CO2 emissions across the entire value chain, and ways underway to reduce such emissions. This discussion will examine the value chain from ore extraction, processing and the creation of final product. Depending on the metal and the particular ore, mining and mineral processing can contribute to smaller amounts (such as for iron ore) or greater amounts (such as for copper) to the total CO2 emissions for each metal, with the balance of scope 1,2 & 3 emissions being a culmination of the various inputs required to produce finished metals. Hence it is considered important that these respective contributions be properly understood by all players in the industry.
Moreover, from a governance perspective, it is important that the integration of technology related financial drivers in economic evaluations are properly accounted for and aligned within the requirements of Mineral Reserve and Resource Estimation in establishing RPEE and economic viability.
