Abstract
In surface mining operations, shovels are critical for excavation and material handling, necessitating strict alignment with strategic mine plans. Traditional methodologies for real-time terrain navigation and visualization, crucial for adhering to these plans, often encounter significant limitations. These include the oversimplification of shovel movements and dig situations due to limited perception capabilities in assessing surrounding terrain. 'dig3D,' developed by HummingBird Solutions Inc and trialed at a mining operation in British Columbia, addresses these deficiencies with a sophisticated Lidar-based 3D terrain mapping and visualization system. Operating in real-time, it considerably enhances shovel operators' situational awareness by providing precise, immediate feedback on compliance with mine plans and design surfaces during excavation. This leads to a reduction in the need for frequent machine repositioning, thereby boosting production efficiency. Moreover, the deployment of dig3D limits the need for regular localized terrain surveys, enhancing occupational health and safety standards on mining sites. This paper discusses the operational benefits and production impacts of such advanced systems and explores some of the technical, logistical, and economic challenges encountered in their deployment and optimization.
